Who are the supporters of learning?
While reading about the “Foundations of Educational technology”, I came across this interesting table, outlining the various roles that support learning. The author lists eleven individual roles and, even though I recognise its instructive merits, I can’t help thinking that this very precise categorisation is somewhat artificial. Many educational institutions cannot afford specific persons to carry out each role and we often find individuals involved in quite a few of the categories. Whether this is a good or a bad thing is still debatable. One may argue that being involved at various levels (e.g. designing, implementing and evaluating the learning activities) brings added value and coherence to the educational process. But one may also consider the benefits of a specialised role, tackled exclusively and in a thorough manner.
After a very quick analysis, I feel like I myself am involved (to different extents) in seven or eight of the above mentioned roles. Talking about acquiring a holistic view of your discipline…
